About this Program

This 18-credit certificate is designed to prepare individuals to be employed as Tax Practitioners. With this certificate, an individual may seek to participate in the Annual Filing Season (AFS) program of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Individuals who participate in the AFS pass an exam administered by the IRS and maintain certain continuing education requirements. The credits earned in the Tax Preparer Certificate also apply toward the completion of the Accounting Clerk Diploma, the Accounting Diploma, and the Accounting Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree. The curriculum provides a broad mix of foundation accounting courses, with emphasis on
individual income taxes, business income taxation, and payroll accounting and reporting. This certificate may be completed totally online. Riverlands online accounting classes follow the Quality Matters rubric, which prescribes standards for online course design. Classes that display the QM logo have undergone a Peer Review and are certified as having met Quality Matters standards.
