Student Support Services (SSS) Retention Specialist

Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for providing SSS required services, resources, and support to TRIO program eligible students in the areas of academic guidance along with financial aid education and information, financial literacy education, and assistance in applying for federal student aid and scholarships.  Additional institutional duties outside of TRIO SSS responsibilities will be assigned.

This position is 10% institutionally-funded and 90% funded by a TRIO Student Support Services grant from the U.S. Department of Education to serve students who are first generation, low-income, or having a disability and persons who are from these groups are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in higher education, human development, learning theory, psychology, or related field required.
  • Experience in educational or federal grant programs, advising, counseling, or student services.
  • Knowledge of TRIO programs, Student Support Services grant and its policies.
  • Knowledge of HCC’s programs, resources, activities and unique opportunities.
  • Knowledge of advising and/or counseling in a higher education setting. 
  • Knowledge of computer software applications (Microsoft Office) and student data base program.
  • Experience in working with disadvantaged, culturally and racially diverse populations and sensitive to student concerns
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, sensitivity to eligible students in order to work with people of diverse backgrounds, including students, faculty, administration and staff.
  • Ability to organize and maintain necessary records to meet federal grant standards.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to provide TRIO SSS required services and to accomplish TRIO SSS grant objectives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in education, counseling, administration or related field.
  • Understanding of financial aid and financial literacy education
