The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees today named Joseph Sertich president of the new Northeast Minnesota Higher Education District. The district includes Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Mesabi Range Community and Technical College in Virginia and Eveleth and Vermilion Community College in Ely.

"Joe Sertich has the experience and record of participatory leadership to do a great job in this position," said Morris J. Anderson, chancellor of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. "He is the ideal candidate for the job." Sertich, 48, has served as president of Itasca Community College since 1996. He was president of the former Range Technical College in Hibbing from 1995 to 1996.

A graduate of Bemidji State University, Sertich earned his doctor of education degree from the University of Minnesota in 1995. He wrote his dissertation on integrating liberal and vocational education at two-year institutions of higher education.

The Northeast Minnesota Higher Education district, approved by the Board of Trustees on Sept. 22, will include Rainy River Community College in the academic year 2001-2002, and Hibbing Community College when there is a change in presidential leadership.
