The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees today approved a package of tuition and fee increases for the 2002-2003 academic year averaging 10.0 percent or $290, bringing the annual average tuition and fees to $3,183.
Tuition alone will increase 10.7 percent, which is less than the 12.7 percent tuition increase that had been anticipated last year for the 2002-2003 academic year.
"The students made a very compelling case that we should cut costs as much as possible, without hurting quality, and dip into reserves so that we could hold down the tuition increases," said Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Chancellor James H. McCormick.
The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities also absorbed a $22.7 million cut in the appropriation for the 2003 fiscal year in response to the state budget deficit.
Each of the 34 institutions proposes its own increases in tuition and fees to the Board of Trustees, which voted 12-3 to approve the package of increases as part of a $1.5 billion budget for the 2003 fiscal year. The increases range from 6.5 percent to 12.9 percent.
At the two-year community and technical colleges, annual tuition and fees will average $3,040 for full-time students. At four-year state universities, tuition and fees will average $3,719.
