Responsibilities:

Bemidji State University is seeking a Geologist with a focus in Hydrology and/or Water Resources who can also contribute teaching expertise to other high growth areas in the Center including the Environmental Studies and Geospatial Techniques. The requested faculty position will provide primary support for existing Geology/Earth Science Minor, the Earth Science Emphasis in Geography, the Secondary Science Education, Earth and Space Science Emphasis area.  This position is aimed at working in cross disciplinary fashion to grow the Geology Minor and work to integrate Geology and Environmentally focused coursework across the curriculum. Additionally, we expect this faculty member will contribute expertise to the Environmental Studies undergraduate and graduate programs and maintain the geoscience presence within the Liberal Education curriculum.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Preferred qualifications include the ability and desire to teach the following courses: Environmental Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Physical Geology, Historical Geology. The successful candidate will also teach courses in at least two of the following areas: Introduction to Environmental Studies, People of the Environment and Remote Sensing.We would also welcome faculty with a secondaryteaching focus on Environmental Geophysics, Mineralogy and Petrology, Stratigraphy and Sedimentation, or Glacial Geology. Opportunities to develop new courses in the geoscience area will be available.Expected teaching load is 24 credits per academic year.Additional summer and online teaching opportunities are available.
  • Supervise student internships and research at the undergraduate and graduate (Masters) levels.
  • Advise undergraduate environmental studies majors and Geology/Space Studies minors providing academic guidance and assistance with placement planning.
  • Have an interest in developing research related to Native American and tribal issues.
  • Coordinate existing Geology, Earth Science, and Space Studies minor programs to include curriculum planning and management, course scheduling, coordination with other programs, etc.
  • Coordinate with the Professional Education Department to ensure that learning outcomes for students seeking secondary education science licensure with an Earth and Space Science emphasis met.  Complete required Professional Education assessment activities.
  • Participate in program planning and curriculum development in Environmental Studies and assessment activities in Environmental Studies, Liberal Education, and Professional Education.
  • Possess skills and ability to design and deliver online courses with Desire to Learn (D2L) software or willingness to obtain necessary skills for online course design and delivery.
  • Pursue research activities in areas of expertise, including applied research of interest to clients in northern Minnesota.
  • Pursue external funding to support research, higher education, and/or outreach activities.
  • As appropriate, participate in faculty governance, committee work, outreach, or other service opportunities.
  • Participate in activities that support Bemidji State University’s signature themes of environmental stewardship, civic engagement, and global/multicultural understanding.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completed Ph.D. in Geology or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and/or interest working with students and colleagues from multi-cultural and diverse backgrounds and using culturally responsive pedagogy and practice
