Christopher Halling is named MnSCU financial aid director

Christopher Halling, former director of graduate and professional school relations for Northstar Guarantee Inc. in St. Paul, is the new system director for student financial aid with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU).

Halling will be responsible for supporting the work of campus financial aid offices by serving as a liaison with state and federal funding agencies and providing expert advice on compliance with financial aid regulations. He replaces Janet Hyllested, who has taken an extended leave of absence.

At Northstar Guarantee, Halling was responsible for promotion and customer relations for national law and MBA student loan programs from 1994 until earlier this month. The company guarantees and services federal student loans.

From 1989 to 1994, Halling served as director of the Office of Student Financial Aid at the University of Minnesota, managing the administration of nearly $250 million annually in grant, loan, student employment and scholarship programs. He joined the office in 1987, working first as assistant, and then associate, director.

He was director of financial aid at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul from 1981 to 1987. He also worked there as assistant director of financial aid and news bureau director.

Halling received a B.A. in English from the University of St. Thomas.
