The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees today amended its bonding request to the 2002 Legislature to add $17.5 million in capital improvement funds for a possible land purchase in downtown Minneapolis.

The board action would enable the Minneapolis Community and Technical College to purchase nearby property for expansion.

The Board of Trustees also will request an unspecified amount to cover costs of replacing the Southwest State University food services facility that was destroyed in a January fire. The total costs of the blaze, which caused heavy smoke and water damage to other buildings, and the portion not covered by insurance have not yet been determined.

The action brings the total bonding request to $268.4 million. The funds will be used for repair, replacement and construction projects on the 53 campuses throughout the state.
