The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees today approved changing the name of St. Paul Technical College to Saint Paul College - A Community and Technical College. The name change reflects an expanded mission for the college, approved by the board earlier this year, which establishes the technical college as a comprehensive community and technical college.

"The expanded mission is a deliberate effort to increase opportunities for St. Paul's urban residents," said Donovan Schwichtenberg, president of the college. "The new name itself was the result of extensive market research and builds on our tradition of serving the city of St. Paul since 1919."

The college currently serves about 11,000 students and provides specific career training in dozens of occupational areas including health care, construction trades, computer careers and business. This fall, Saint Paul College -A Community and Technical College, began offering general education courses that lead to an Associate in Arts degree, which can serve as the first two years of a baccalaureate degree.
