Joyce Helens appointed president of St. Cloud Technical College

Joyce Helens was appointed president of St. Cloud Technical College today by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees.

Helens, 55, has served as executive director of the University of Alaska Corporate Programs since 1999. Previously, Helens was the associate dean for instruction and dean at the University of Alaska Anchorage; president of Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash.; executive dean of Collin County Community College, McKinney, Texas; and director of instruction and Maywood Park Center Campus at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.

"I'm pleased that the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system was able to attract a high-caliber candidate who has such a successful record of leadership and innovation in higher education," said Chair Robert Hoffman.

She has pursued doctoral studies in higher education administration at Portland State University and has a master's degree in English from Portland State University and a bachelor's degree in English from St. Martin's College in Lacey, Wash.

Chancellor James H. McCormick, who recommended Helens' appointment, said, "Joyce Helens has worked extensively with communities, government and business to form new and exciting partnerships in higher education. I believe her ability to see the big picture and open doors to a broader spectrum of individuals will play a key role in creating an exciting future for St. Cloud Technical College."

The search committee was led by Jim Johnson, president of Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical and included students, faculty, staff and community representatives from the campus. "Joyce Helens has a well-rounded background in teaching and on the administrative side. She is an engaged listener with an inclusive management style. She is a good fit for the culture at St. Cloud Technical College."

In accepting the appointment, Helens said, "It's an honor to be part of the system. What has attracted me about this position is our compatibility. I'm passionate about students, service to students and reaching out to students."

She will replace Joan Volkmuth, who has served as president since 1997 and is retiring. Her appointment becomes effective July 1. St. Cloud Technical College serves more than 4,800 students in credit courses annually and provides a wide variety of educational programs and delivery options.

Helens was one of four presidents appointed today. The other newly appointed presidents are: Larry Lundblad, Central Lakes College in Brainerd and Staples; Kathryn Jeffery, Hennepin Technical College in Eden Prairie and Brooklyn Park; and Anne Temte, Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls and East Grand Forks.
