About this Program

A Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science is a science-based approach to analyzing and improving human performance. Students learn both the theory and practice of assessing, designing, and implementing effective exercise programs. SMSU offers this degree at four different locations: 1) Marshall, MN; 2) Anoka-Ramsey CC, Coon Rapids; 3) Normandale CC, Bloomington, MN; and 4) North Hennepin CC, Brooklyn Park, MN. One of the distinctive features of our program is a hands-on applied learning component embedded throughout the curriculum where students apply exercise science principles to real life situations. Students have the option to choose between four emphases:

1) Allied Health: this emphasis prepares students for graduate and professional schools that may lead to career opportunities in Health Professions such as Exercise Physiology, Cardiac Rehab, and Rehabilitative Services (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Chiropractic Medicine, Physician Assistant, etc.).

2) Corporate Wellness/Exercise Leadership: this emphasis prepares students for a career in either corporate wellness/health promotion or management/business owner in the health and fitness industry. Career opportunities range from Wellness Director to Manager or Business Owner of an Exercise Facility, etc.

3) Coaching and Human Performance: this emphasis is designed to prepare students for a career in athletic coaching and/or athletic enhancement opportunities. Careers include Athletic Coach at the High School or College level, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Athletic Enhancement/Sport Specific Training opportunities.

4) Exercise Specialist (P): as the transfer pathway degree for the Exercise Science Major, this emphasis is design to be a broad-based academic preparation that incorporates aspects from all the other emphases. With advising, this emphasis will prepare students for any career in the Health and Exercise field. Or, this emphasis may also be used to prepare students for graduate and/or profession school.

Students completing their Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science are prepared to sit for the industry standard in certification exams through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). A four-year degree is a prerequisite criteria for the more advanced Health and Fitness Certifications in the field.
