BOARD ACTION
Proposed Name for Multi-College District Involving Mesabi Range Community and Technical College and Vermilion Community College

BACKGROUND

The Board of Trustees previously approved the formation of a multi-college district made up of Mesabi Range Community and Technical College and Vermilion Community College that became effective July 1, 1996. The president of the multi-college district is directly administering one campus with campus administrators at each of the other two sites reporting to the president.

The Name Search Committee, comprised of members from the community as well as students and campus constituents representing the three institutions, encouraged active participation from students, staff and the community. Memos were sent to all campus employees, news releases were forwarded to area news agencies, and an advertisement requesting name suggestions followed the news release. A total of 40 possible names were received. The committee narrowed the choices to three names and then recommended the names in priority order.

The proposed name, "Laurentian" was the strong preference of the committee and of polled constituents. This proper name refers geographically to the Laurentian Divide associated with the area. Based on the recommendation from President Jon Harris, Chancellor Eaton recommends approval of the name "Laurentian Community and Technical College District."

RECOMMENDATION

The Board of Trustees establishes the name "Laurentian Community and Technical College District" for the consolidated Mesabi Range Community and Technical College and Vermilion Community College.
