Part 1. Purpose
To create an inclusive community for enrolled students to live and learn on campus, promoting the continuity between academic and residential life, including student engagement activities.

Part 2. Definitions

Student housing
On- or off-campus housing for students that is owned, leased, or managed by colleges and universities of Minnesota State.

Part 3. College and University Student Housing
Colleges and universities that provide student housing:

  1. shall strive to establish inclusive, reasonably priced, and safe student housing, and
  2. may establish policies that require students to live in student housing.

Part 4. Representation, Consultation, and Review Colleges and universities shall:

  1. consult with the campus student associations on college or university student housing policies and fees, and
  2. invite and consider student input on other student housing matters.

3/20/24 – Full Review. In Part 1 updated the purpose statement, in Part 2 clarified in the definition of “student housing” that it includes both on- and off-campus housing, relocated “reasonably priced” from Part 1 to Part 3a and added the aspirational goals of “establishing inclusive, reasonably-priced, and safe student housing”, and added new Part 4. Representation, Consultation, and Review to promote student involvement in student housing decisions.

10/19/16 - Applied new formatting and writing standards resulting in technical edits, added “leased” to the definition of “student housing”.

01/17/07 - The amendment changed the title of the policy from Residence Hall, slightly broadened campus authority to establish a policy to require students to live on campus, and added "campus student association" to be consistent with Policy 2.3.
