Teaching and Learning Competency

Newly hired unlimited faculty at Minnesota State colleges are required to complete a Teaching and Learning Competency requirement within six academic-year semesters of being hired (Procedure 3.32.1, Part 8).

NED Teaching and Learning Competency Courses

To complete this requirement, faculty can complete the following seven courses, available at no cost, through the Minnesota State Network for Educational Development (NED). Six of the courses require evaluation.

Philosophy of Community and Technical College Education

The Philosophy of Community and Technical College Education course is asynchronous and online only. This is a long course that requires completion.

Six Courses – Three Course Delivery Options

The remaining six courses require an evaluation of competency. These courses may be completed in one of three delivery options: asynchronous online, two weekend hybrid, or a weeklong intensive in-person experience.

Asynchronous Online

  • Each asynchronous course is 3 weeks long
  • Fully online with optional synchronous meetings
  • Faculty may take the six courses concurrently and in any order

Two Weekend Hybrid

  • Each hybrid intensive is 2 weekends, with about a month in between each weekend
  • The weekends are in-person Friday-Saturday, plus online learning
  • Complete six courses in about one month

Weeklong Intensive In-Person

  • Each weeklong intensive is 1 week
  • Fully in-person Monday-Friday, plus submit assignments online
  • Complete six courses in one week

The NED was established to provide educational development opportunities that are designed by Minnesota State faculty and staff for Minnesota State faculty and staff. The Academic Affairs College Faculty Credentialing unit develops policies and procedures to assure qualified individuals perform faculty work in our two-year colleges through system-established faculty minimum qualifications under Board Policy 3.32 and Procedure 3.32.1.
